Publish A Book
Comic Book Publishers
Crime, horror, science fiction and adventure are all fodder for comic book publishers. The 20th century saw the introduction of superheroes and the villains they had to face. Comic books have a loyal band of fans and their characters have spawned TV shows, movies, video games and other merchandise. The secret to a successful edition is an imaginative plot, well-executed artwork and staying faithful to the characters. Two publishers have dominated the industry and they are DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
DC Comics is a subsidiary of Time-Warner and the company made its name, largely due to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Interest in Batman, which began in 1939, is still going strong today as a result of the movie, Batman Begins. Superman was introduced in 1938 and that character has also been re-invented in a film, in Superman Returns. Each incarnation boosts sales for the comic book publishers, as DC found when the Batman television series ran in the 1960s. In 1986, writer and artist Frank Miller wrote Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. These were tales of a dark, gritty nature. The new Batman film, to be released in 2008, is called The Dark Knight and is eagerly anticipated. Other DC characters include the Green Lantern, Supergirl, Batwoman and Bat-Girl.
Rival company Marvel Comics has an impressive list of characters and they have enjoyed a lot of exposure on the big screen in recent years. Any comic book publisher would be pleased to be associated with Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Captain America, and Daredevil. Marvel has greatly benefited from commissioning the best writers and artists in the genre. The first Marvel superhero to appear was The Human Torch. Joe Simon and artist, Jack Kirby created Captain America and Kirby also co-created The Fantastic Four with Marvel’s most famous contributor, Stan Lee. Lee and Steve Ditko created probably the most successful Marvel character in Spider-Man. Of all the comic book publishers, Marvel had a reputation for tackling serious issues. A Spider-Man story about drug abuse appeared in the 1970s.
The independent, Dark Horse Comics publishes licensed comics with titles that include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Aliens and Star Wars. They were also successful in publishing Sin City, the cult story by Frank Miller, and Hellboy. Dark Horse is a comic book publisher that has moved into other fields. Their film company, Dark Horse Entertainment, has produced films based on comic book characters, such as The Mask. The company also publishes novelisations of some of their stories, including Aliens and Predator.
Writing A Biography
When we were assigned to write a biography in college, I always believed that it was nothing that would ever come in handy. Writing a biography paper seemed like one of those exercises merely designed to give you experience following instructions and writing clean language. Although I knew it was important to be able to look through the details of someone’s life and summarize them in some fields, I couldn’t see how it would apply to me in my professional life.
As I have gotten older, however, I have become more interested in writing a biography. Many of my friends are writing autobiographies, turning their rather mundane lives in to quite interesting art. My interest is a little bit different. For me, the appeal of writing a biography of examining a historical figure that interests me. History is filled with many neglected but important people who really shaped the events of the times. I have always believed that knowledge is important, and writing a biography is a great way to advance human knowledge.
Of course, writing biographies is not as simple as just sitting down and starting. If it was, every history buff would have done it. I have always enjoyed writing fiction, but writing nonfiction is a lot more difficult. You have no leeway to fabricate events, and you have to make sure to keep your personal biases in check. You can write a biography was a slant if you want to, but you have to be aware of that slant. If you aren’t, you are not being honest with yourself or your readers. The world is filled with too much biased writing that claims to be the one and only truth. It is a shame to add any more to the pile.
Even with all of these difficulties, writing a biography is the most interesting project that I have ever started. Although I have not gotten very far yet, I’m already really enjoying it, and I’m optimistic about the future. I don’t think this will make my career as a writer, but I might be able to interest a small publisher in what I have been working on. You never know until you try, and it is definitely worth the effort. Even if I can’t, doing this project for myself will be enough. It is a fascinating hobby, after all, and one that is worth doing. If I make a writing career out of it, all the better!
Writing an Ebook
I’ve been making a fantastic living through online ventures for the past five years or so, and I’m completely convinced that with my help and guidance, others will be able to do the same thing. I’m sure that people would pay good money to learn my secrets, so that’s why I’m thinking about writing an ebook to sell on my websites. The only problem is, I’ve never done this sort of thing before, and don’t really know where to start.
From talking to other online entrepreneurs, there are several things that I need to take into consideration before writing an ebook. For example, it’s important that I guard my ebook from theft or illegal reproduction. I can do this by purchasing a protection program, issuing passwords to unlock the book only after payment is received, or by using Digital Rights Management. These steps will ensure that the ebook can’t be copied or traded very easily.
I also learned that there’s a definite formula to writing an ebook, and that once I get the basic feel for how to do it, the entire creation process will become a lot easier. Savvy marketers have discovered that there’s an ideal length for ebooks, that the margins should be a certain width, and that there should be plenty of white space on each page so the reader doesn’t get intimidated at the prospect of taking in too much information. There are even pricing guidelines out there to help me decide how much to sell my finished product for! I never could have figured these things out for myself, so I feel like I’m making good progress already.
At this point, I think it would probably be best for me to purchase some special software that will allow me to take a step-by-step approach to writing an ebook. I’ve seen several of these types of programs advertised online, and have even checked out some of their features. It seems that the prices are pretty good for what the software delivers, so I should probably place my order soon. After all, the sooner I finish my book, the sooner I can start making money from it!
I’m excited about the prospect of writing an ebook, but I definitely need more information before I can begin in earnest. I’m going to devote the next couple of days to research, and will hopefully be in a better position to evaluate where I stand after that.
